Important Immuniztion Update!

NEW requirement in all State of Virginia Schools for rising sixth grade students

A booster dose of tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine is required to enter sixth grade if more than five years have elapsed since the last dose of a tetanus toxoid containing vaccine. This shot may be listed as T, Td, Dtap, and/ or Tdap on your student’s immunization record.

Please contact your child’s physician, your military shot clinic, or the Hampton Health Department’s Immunization Clinic to schedule your child’s booster shot as soon as possible.

When your child receives the shot, please bring documentation to the middle school your child will be attending in the fall.

Immunizations required for school entry are free at the Hampton Health Department. The Immunization Clinic is located at 3130 Victoria Boulevard. Their hours are 8 to 11:30 and 1 to 3:30 daily.

If you have further questions, please contact your child’s physician, the Hampton Health Department’s Immunization Clinic at 727-1172 ext. 148, or Hampton City Schools’ Health Services office at 727-2363.

Note: Your child will not be able to start sixth grade until the school nurse has documentation of a Tdap booster shot.

Guidelines for keeping your child home from school

Keep home from school:

  • Any physical or emotional condition that would prevent him/her from participating comfortably in class and prevent the student from concentrating and completing assignments.
  • A fever of 100 degrees or more, coupled with a rash, earache, sore throat, sluggishness, or nausea. Fever may signal a highly contagious infection. Keep the child home until he/she is fever free for 24 hours. Never give aspirin to a child under 19 years old.
  • A persistent, productive cough and wheezing coupled with a thick or constant nasal discharge.
  • An undiagnosed rash, especially when there is a fever and behavioral changes.
  • Pinkeye, in which there is a white or yellow drainage or crusting (often matted eyelids after sleep), eye pain, and redness.
  • Head lice: keep home until treated and all nits are removed.
  • Chicken Pox: keep home until all blisters are scabbed over and dry.
  • Diarrhea or vomiting more that once or accompanied by fever, rash, or general weakness.
  • Impetigo: keep home for 24 hours after starting antibiotic treatment.
  • Ringworm (contagious fungus infection): keep home until treatment is started. Ringworm on the scalp requires an oral medication that is ordered by your physician. Ringworm on the body can be treated with a cream (bought over the counter) applied directly to affected area.

Send to school:

  • Vague complaints of aches, pains, or fatigue.
  • Sniffles, a runny nose, and mild cough without a fever.
  • A single episode of diarrhea or vomiting without any other symptoms.
FYI
If your child becomes ill at school, and needs to go home, please remember to bring your ID when signing him/her out for the day. Only people included on the emergency card will be allowed to pick up your child. These cards are sent home with the children the first week of school. Please fill these out and return them as soon as possible. Keep information updated on these cards to ensure immediate contact in case of emergencies. You can do so by calling, emailing, or stopping by the clinic. (see sample by clicking on the links for front and back).
